Thousands of children and young people across Dundee enjoyed discounted swimming during the school holidays, with almost 19,000 £1 swims recorded through a popular initiative aimed at helping families access affordable physical activity.

A total of 18,590 discounted swims were delivered across pools managed by Leisure & Culture Dundee, including Olympia, during the summer and October school holidays. This included 13,850 swims over the summer break and a further 4,740 during the October holidays.

The £1 swimming offer was introduced to remove cost barriers and encourage more children and young people to stay active during school breaks while enjoying the benefits of swimming.

Scott Urquhart, Managing Director of Leisure & Culture Dundee, said:

"We are delighted that so many children and young people took advantage of the £1 swimming offer during both the summer and October school holidays.

"By reducing cost barriers, we have been able to welcome thousands of young people into our pools and help families enjoy affordable activities during the holidays.

"The strong uptake reflects the continuing demand for affordable leisure opportunities and highlights the important role that Dundee's leisure facilities play in supporting health and wellbeing across the city."

Children and Families Convener Stewart Hunter said:

"We know how expensive the school holidays can be, especially with the rising cost of days for families. It’s great that we have been able to offer £1 swimming sessions, which have once again proved popular.

"We are committed to supporting families through the cost-of-living crisis, and low-cost, accessible initiatives like this are invaluable for children and young people during the holidays, giving them the chance to stay active, enjoy themselves and make the most of their time off."

The £1 swimming programme formed part of the 2026 Summer of Sport initiative, which was backed by Scottish Government investment and delivered locally by Dundee City Council and Leisure & Culture Dundee through Active Dundee, Active Schools and partner organisations.
